Manchester, New Hampshire
Project Overview
The City of Manchester and the MPD have seen a recent increase in gun crime, gunfire incidents, simple assaults, as well as thefts from building and motor vehicles. In addition to the increase in violent and property crime, the MPD also have concerns about clearance rates for simple assault and various types of theft-related crimes. To address the rise in crime rates and concerns about clearance rates, as well as contribute to the body of knowledge regarding police checklists, the MPD plans to implement investigative checklists for shooting incidents and gun crimes, assaults, thefts from buildings, thefts from motor vehicles, and auto thefts. Through collaboration between the MPD and their research partner, Dr. Haberman will evaluate the effectiveness of investigative checklists for improving case clearance outcomes.
Data Highlight:
- From 2021 to 2022, gun crimes and gunfire incidents in Manchester increased 41% and 21%, respectively.
- The MPD’s clearance rates for various types of theft (from a building, motor vehicles, motor vehicle parts and accessories) remain at 3% over the past 5 years.
- Over the past 5 years, the MPD’s clearance rate for non-fatal shootings is 43%.
