The Smart Policing Initiative presented a webinar on “SPI 101: Preparing for the National Smart Policing Meeting.” James “Chip” R. Coldren, Jr. (SPI Project Director), Hildy Saizow (SPI Subject Matter Expert), and Vivian Chu (SPI Deputy Project Manager) facilitated this online seminar for Phase IV sites. During this presentation, they presented the vision, goals and objectives of Smart Policing, gave examples of current Smart Policing Initiatives and research efforts, and discussed some of the challenges sites are experiencing. They also presented the goals and expected outcomes of the upcoming national meeting and how sites can prepare to make the most of their experience. The webinar concluded with a brief overview of the SPI website and its many resources and tools. This webinar was intended for all Phase IV SPI site team members, including coordinators and research partners, particularly those individuals participating in the Spring 2013 SPI National Meeting.

- The Boston, MA Site Spotlight (Phase I): The Boston team evaluated the impacts of their Safe Street Team (SST) strategy. The SSTs applied problem-oriented, community-policing strategies to identify and address recurring problems in their target areas (disadvantaged, minority neighborhoods).
- Palm Beach County, FL Program Profile: The Palm Beach County team sought to address this robbery problem, as well as the challenges surrounding policing immigrant communities more generally, through their Smart Policing Initiative (SPI). The PBSO SPI included targeted efforts to increase police legitimacy, to improve residents’ awareness of their victimization risk, and to empower residents to embrace crime prevention in their community.
