The September 11 attacks impacted society generally, and law enforcement specifically, in dramatic ways. One of the major trends has been changing expectations regarding criminal intelligence practices among state, local, and tribal (SLT) law enforcement agencies and the need to coordinate intelligence efforts and share information at all levels of government. In fact, enhancing intelligence efforts has emerged as a critical issue for the prevention of all threats and crimes.
PERF has released a new report in the Critical Issues in Policing series, “Policing and the Economic Downturn: Striving for Efficiency Is the New Normal.” This report provides details about PERF’s 2012 survey of law enforcement agencies, which found that 41 percent of responding departments were planning budget cuts for their next fiscal year. The Edmonton Police Service launched its Curb the Danger (CTD) program in 2006. CTD aims to increase community participation in the real-time detection and apprehension of impaired drivers by encouraging citizens to call 9-1-1 if they observe a suspected impaired driver. The aim is to decrease the cost of the criminal justice system, while reducing recidivism and improving outcomes for people accused of and convicted of criminal behavior.
