Study findings indicate that the total effect on delinquency of being stopped or arrested by police depended on the youth’s level of satisfaction with the encounter. In addition, procedural injustice mediated some of the effect of police contact on delinquency, but its relationship with delinquency was not direct. The study concludes that the negative consequences of being stopped or arrested were mitigated, but not eliminated, when the police contact was perceived favorably by the involved… Read More
As police departments across the United States equip officers with body worn cameras, research has focused on the technology’s impact on police interactions with citizens, officer misconduct, officer use of force, and false allegations against police. Given the large number of police agencies implementing BWCs across the country (numbering in the thousands), there will be a growing number of opportunities for BWC evaluations and expectations that these programs will be evaluated.
There has been a dramatic increase in the criminal justice use of body worn cameras (BWCs) in the last few years. As a result of governmental and news media scrutiny of law enforcement interactions with the public, many think that BWCs have the potential benefit of increased legitimacy and accountability for both citizens and the law enforcement community. Since then, commercially available BWCs have flooded the market. There are now over 60 different body worn cameras produced specifically… Read More

LISC has supported collaboration between police and residents in high crime areas for years, including in many communities of color where mutual distrust runs deep. Partnership is a tall order unless all sides show a willingness to get to know each other as people—people who want to go home safe to their families at the end of the day. In an op-ed for the San Francisco Chronicle, Rev. Ben McBride describes this critical work in Oakland, CA, now expanding to other cities. And he’ll share more… Read More
This study examines the effectiveness of the juvenile curfew. The juvenile curfew has a common sense appeal: keep youth at home during the late night and early morning hours and you will prevent them from committing a crime or being a victim of a crime, but prior reviews question the effectiveness of curfews. The aim of this review was to synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of juvenile curfews in reducing criminal behavior and victimization among youth.
Law enforcement capabilities increasingly depend on records management systems (RMSs) that maintain agencies' case histories, computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems that maintain agencies' calls for service and call response histories, and other data systems. There are also increasing demands to share information with regional, state, and federal repositories of criminal justice information.
This paper outlines the stark differences in the nature of police crime control conversations between the first convening of the Executive Session on Policing (1985-1991) and the second (2008-2014) resulting from an unprecedented growth in rigorous evaluation research on what works in police crime prevention.
This bulletin proposes a new criminal justice paradigm for young men and women ages 18 to 24. Noting that the human brain has been clinically shown to not fully mature prior to the mid-20s, the authors suggest new institutional methods and processes for young adult justice that can meet the realities of life for today’s disadvantaged youth involved in crime and the criminal justice system. The authors envision a system that extends the reach of the juvenile court to reflect a modern… Read More
