This pilot initiative in the Palm Beach County school district — the School Safety and Student Performance Program — proceeded from the premise that improved school safety requires closer attention to law enforcement- and justice-involved youth. The program was designed to identify ways to discourage delinquency and encourage academic success among at-risk youth without being punitive. Another goal was to improve the overall safety of the school setting.

In 2018, the Hate Crimes Enforcement and Prevention Initiative convened a law enforcement roundtable on challenges and successes in identifying, reporting, and tracking hate crimes. Although hate crimes and other bias-motivated incidents are generally investigated and prosecuted as state, local, or tribal matters, the Federal Government collaborates with state and local partners in the effort to eliminate these crimes from our communities.
The West Greenwich (Rhode Island) Police Department requested assistance through the Collaborative Reform Initiative Technical Assistance Center (CRI-TAC) to host an event for local law enforcement agencies from Rhode Island and the surrounding areas to discuss regional challenges in recruitment, hiring, and retention. Law enforcement strategies for addressing intimate partner violence (IPV) have changed over time. In the 1980s, agencies began implementing policies to combat IPV by criminalizing it, using tactics such as mandatory arrest. Historically, police researchers have struggled to validly measure patrol officer productivity and correlate productivity metrics to meaningful community outcomes, such as crime and disorder. This article discusses traditional productivity metrics, recurrent threats to the validity of these measures, and innovative methods for more accurately capturing patrol productivity.
Police departments struggle with recruiting and retaining women in sworn law enforcement positions. This issue has a greater impact on state organizations than their county and municipal counterparts. This article reviews strategies to recruit and retain women officers in law enforcement agencies. It will be published with a collection of entries written by participants of NIJ’s Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science (LEADS) Scholars program.
Camden, New Jersey, a city with nearly 78,000 residents, has seen its fair share of violence over the years; more recently, however, it has experienced a drop in crime. From 2008 to 2014 (the most recently available Uniform Crime Report data), the violent crime rate in Camden City decreased 11.4 percent; while its nonviolent crime rate decreased 40.1 percent. This is welcome news to residents.
Integrating evidence-based research into police practice is now an expectation for police agencies. This article discusses how the future direction of evidence-based policing can be enhanced through strong project management. It will illustrate how research evaluations can be supported in a way that protects the integrity of the research, thereby producing valuable results that increase the justification for policy change and recommendations for best practices.
